Leeds United have made one of the most exciting goalkeeping signings of the summer, completing a £45 million deal for Manchester City's James Trafford. The 23-year-old England international becomes Leeds' undisputed No.1 under head coach Daniel Farke, ending a frustrating chapter at the Etihad where he was repeatedly talked up and then marginalised.

City's Handling of Trafford Questioned

Manchester City's treatment of Trafford has puzzled many inside the game. Re-signed from Burnley last summer for £27 million after the Clarets were relegated, he was handed the No.1 jersey and promised a meaningful run as City's starting goalkeeper. Then, just three games into the new season, Pep Guardiola signed Gianluigi Donnarumma from PSG — immediately reducing Trafford to cup duties. The move made City significant profit on paper but has left questions about their long-term planning for young English talent.

Why Leeds Won the Race

Trafford had no shortage of suitors — Newcastle United were among several Premier League clubs tracking him. But the England international chose Elland Road, where he knows he will play every week and where a club with ambition but room to grow represents the ideal platform. Leeds have already added Harry Wilson on a free and Tarik Muharemovic this summer, and Trafford's arrival signals that Farke is building something genuine in Yorkshire.

England No.1 Ambitions

Thomas Tuchel included Trafford in England's World Cup squad despite his limited game time at City — a sign of just how highly he is regarded at international level. With Jordan Pickford now 32, Leeds could have found themselves the future England No.1. If Trafford delivers consistent performances in the Premier League, his path to the Wembley gloves could open up sooner than expected.
