Liverpool have moved quickly to address a mounting defensive crisis by completing a loan deal for Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo. The 27-year-old Uruguayan defender arrives at Anfield under new head coach Andoni Iraola, who has inherited a squad badly depleted at the back and needed reinforcements before the Premier League season begins on August 21.

Liverpool's situation at centre-back heading into the new campaign was genuinely alarming. After struggling with injuries and a loss of form at the Camp Nou, the 27-year-old had become a peripheral figure under Hansi Flick, making only 11 league starts last season. A loan to one of Europe's most ferocious atmospheres — and a club with genuine title ambitions — is exactly the kind of challenge that could reignite his career.
Liverpool hold a reported €55 million buy option, giving them the chance to make the deal permanent next summer if Araujo impresses.
