Canada hosted the 2026 World Cup alongside the United States and Mexico, and for a while it looked like the tournament might deliver a moment that a country could use as a sporting foundation — a deep run by the home nation into the knockout rounds. Morocco ended that story on Friday night in Vancouver, winning 3-0 with a performance that was clinical, organized, and completely without mercy. For a Canadian side that gave everything in the group stage, it was a brutal exit. For Morocco, it was proof that their 2022 semi-final run was not a fluke.

How Morocco Won It

The tone was set in the 12th minute when Youssef En-Nesyri got ahead of his marker from a corner and glanced a header past goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau. Canada pushed for an equalizer but ran into a Moroccan defensive wall that has now kept six clean sheets at this World Cup — the most of any team still in the competition. Hakim Ziyech added a second from distance in the 61st minute, a goal that was part inspiration and part Canada goalkeeper positioning error. Sofiane Boufal put the result beyond doubt from the penalty spot in the 78th minute after a foul on En-Nesyri.

Canada's Exit

Alphonso Davies was Canada's most dangerous player for large stretches, causing problems down the left with the pace and directness that has made him one of Europe's best fullbacks at Bayern Munich. But Davies was operating in isolation too often — Canada's midfield could not find a way to control the tempo against a Moroccan press that suffocated them in the second half. Manager Jesse Marsch will face questions about his tactical approach, specifically the decision to prioritize width over central control. Canada qualified from the group stage for the first time in their history and should be proud of that. The final scoreline, though, suggests they were not yet at the level of the tournament's elite.

Morocco's Quarter-Final

Morocco face either Spain or Japan in the quarter-finals. They are not the surprise package of this tournament — they came in as a genuine contender, and they are proving it. Walid Regragui has built a team that is exceptionally difficult to break down and increasingly lethal on the counter. If they get Spain, that is a match-up of genuine intrigue. If they get Japan, it is Morocco who enter as favourites for the first time.
