The 2026 Ballon d'Or race has a new favourite. After PSG's dramatic penalty shootout victory over Arsenal in the Champions League final in Budapest, Ousmane Dembélé has surged to the top of every major power ranking ahead of what promises to be the most hotly contested individual award in years. The French winger's performances across PSG's entire European campaign — and particularly his equalising goal in the final — have put him in a position nobody quite anticipated at the start of the season.

How the UCL Final Changed Everything

Going into the final, the Ballon d'Or race was genuinely open. Declan Rice, so influential in Arsenal's title-winning campaign, was widely seen as the frontrunner. Harry Kane's consistency for Bayern Munich kept him in the conversation. Lamine Yamal's brilliance at Barcelona had drawn gasps from across the continent. But football has a habit of rewarding those who deliver in the biggest moments, and in Budapest it was Dembélé who seized his chance. His equaliser in normal time swung the game back PSG's way, and his composure in the shootout added the final exclamation mark to an extraordinary individual night.

Where the Candidates Stand Now

With the UCL final dust settled, Dembélé sits comfortably at the top of most updated rankings. Behind him, Harry Kane remains in the picture — his 30+ goal season for Bayern has not been forgotten, and the World Cup in North America now gives him a chance to add the finishing touch to his case. Kylian Mbappé, despite a relatively quiet season by his own standards at Real Madrid, will be desperate to use the World Cup to reignite his campaign. Declan Rice's chances have dimmed slightly after the Arsenal heartbreak, though a strong England showing at the World Cup could reverse the narrative. Vitinha and Kvaratskhelia, both outstanding for PSG all season, are dark horses who should not be written off.

The World Cup Wild Card

What makes the 2026 Ballon d'Or race genuinely unpredictable is the World Cup itself. The tournament runs until July 19 — plenty of time for a player to catapult themselves to the very top of the conversation with a few transcendent performances on the biggest stage of all. A Golden Boot winner, or a player who leads their nation to the title, could leapfrog the field in a matter of weeks. The ceremony is typically held in October, meaning voters will have a full summer of World Cup action fresh in their minds. Everything is still to play for.
