Enzo Fernandez Wants Out: Chelsea Slap £120m Price Tag on World Cup Winner

The relationship between Enzo Fernandez and Chelsea has been deteriorating for some time, and the events of the past few months — the public comments about his future, the apology to the club, the dropped games — have brought things to a point where a summer separation looks more likely than not. Fernandez has contacted Real Madrid through his representative, and both PSG and Atletico Madrid have been made aware that he is open to leaving Stamford Bridge. Chelsea's response has been to place a £120 million asking price on a player they paid £106 million for two years ago. Whether any club is willing to meet that valuation will define how this story ends.

How It Unravelled

The seeds of this situation were planted when Chelsea sacked Enzo Maresca earlier this year. Fernandez had developed a strong working relationship with the Italian manager, and Maresca's exit left him disillusioned with the club's direction. He was critical of the decision internally, and some of those frustrations found their way into the press — prompting the very public apology from both the player and his agent that followed. New manager Liam Rosenior has publicly insisted that Fernandez is part of his plans, but the player's body language since the end of the season has told a different story. The Argentine wants Champions League football, and Chelsea's 10th-place finish means that is not on offer at Stamford Bridge next season.

Real Madrid's Interest and the Price Problem

Real Madrid have been monitoring the situation closely, but Los Blancos are not known for paying the kind of fees Chelsea are demanding. Their preference is always for a deal that suits their own financial model — and £120 million for a 25-year-old with five years remaining on his contract is not that. PSG, who have money to spend after qualifying for the Champions League final, are a more realistic buyer. Chelsea's leverage is the length of that contract: Fernandez is locked in until 2031, which means he cannot walk away and the club holds all the cards in negotiations — in theory. In practice, an unhappy player is a depreciating asset, and Chelsea know it.

What Happens Next

The transfer window opens next month, and by then the picture will become clearer. If a club comes in at £100 million or above, Chelsea are understood to be willing to consider it despite their public position. At £80 million or below, the club will hold firm. Fernandez's Argentina teammates have reportedly been encouraging him to push for a La Liga move, and his own preference remains Real Madrid above all others. This is a saga that has further chapters to run, but the direction of travel seems set: the most expensive signing in Chelsea's history is heading for the exit.

Transfer context: Enzo Fernandez, 25, joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 for £106.8m — a British transfer record at the time. Contract runs until 2031. Chelsea finished 10th in the 2025-26 Premier League. Won 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentina.
