Arsenal have officially confirmed the permanent signing of Ecuador international Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen, following an outstanding loan spell that contributed directly to the Gunners' Premier League title triumph in 2025/26. The 24-year-old defender has penned a long-term contract at the Emirates, with the permanent deal announced on 25 June 2026.

The fee was reported at €52m, a figure Mikel Arteta's recruitment team secured after negotiating a €10m discount on Leverkusen's original asking price — a smart piece of business from a club that has refined its transfer approach considerably under the Spaniard's guidance.

A Loan That Turned Into a Title

Hincapie arrived at Arsenal on loan in the summer of 2025, when he was brought in as part of a defensive restructuring project. What followed exceeded every expectation. The Ecuador international made 39 appearances in all competitions as the Gunners romped to the Premier League crown — their first in three seasons.

He made his debut in a 2-0 Champions League victory at Athletic Club in September and quickly established himself as one of the most reliable defenders in Arteta's squad. In February, he scored his first Arsenal goal in a draw against Wolves and went on to win the club's Player of the Month award in both February and April — a testament to just how consistently excellent he was throughout the campaign.

Real Madrid Interest Repelled

Hincapie's quality did not go unnoticed across Europe. Real Madrid were among the clubs monitoring his situation ahead of the summer, with reports emerging of an enquiry from the Spanish giants. Arsenal moved decisively to activate their permanent option and shut down any possibility of a bidding war.

The message was clear: Hincapie is part of the long-term plan at the Emirates, not a loan-to-sell asset.

A Proven Winner at Club Level

Hincapie arrives with an impressive CV. Before joining Arsenal, he made 166 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen and was part of their historic 2023/24 Bundesliga title-winning squad — the one that went the entire season unbeaten under a certain Xabi Alonso. He also brings 54 senior Ecuador caps, and was still representing his country at the 2026 World Cup when his permanent Arsenal deal was confirmed.

His versatility gives Arteta significant options. Hincapie can play centrally or cover at left-back, making him one of the most valuable defensive profiles in modern elite football — a player who combines positional intelligence with the athletic tools needed to operate at the highest level.

Saliba Injury Makes Signing Even More Timely

The timing of the permanent deal has proven particularly important following reports that William Saliba is set for a lengthy injury lay-off, which forced Arteta into bold decisions for the opening fixtures of the 2026/27 season. Hincapie's permanent status removes any uncertainty around his availability and gives Arsenal a ready-made replacement in the heart of defence.

For a club entering the new season as Premier League champions and with Champions League ambitions firmly intact, securing a defender of Hincapie's calibre on a long-term deal is exactly the kind of decisive transfer business that separates title contenders from also-rans.
