Fourteen Premier League goals in his debut season, a brace against Fulham last weekend, a Champions League final to look forward to — Viktor Gyokeres has had quite a first year at Arsenal. Signed from Sporting CP in July 2025, the Swedish striker came in as something of a calculated risk. He had been brilliant in Portugal, but the Premier League is a different test. The physicality, the pace, the defensive organisation — plenty of players have struggled with the step up. Gyokeres has not.
The goals against Fulham on May 2 were a good example of what he brings. The first was a classic centre-forward's finish — arriving late into the box to meet a low cross. The second showed his movement off the ball, ghosting behind the defence before the Fulham back line had a chance to reorganise. He also set up Bukayo Saka's goal. That kind of all-round contribution — goals, assists, hold-up play — is what Arsenal needed when they brought him in, and he's delivered it consistently.
What makes him different to what Arsenal had before
Arsenal in recent seasons have often looked like a side that needed a different option up front when games were tight or physical. Gabriel Jesus, for all his ability, was prone to injuries and lacked the sheer imposing presence that top striker duels sometimes demand. Gyokeres gives Arteta something else: a target man who can also move, combine and finish with his weaker foot. At 6ft 2in, he wins aerial balls, holds the line high and links play with a touch that bigger strikers often don't have.
His 14 Premier League goals make him Arsenal's top scorer in the league this season, and only a handful of players across the whole division have scored more. That's not a bad return for a player in his first year in English football, in a new country, playing for a team also competing in Champions League semi-finals.
The bigger picture heading into May
Gyokeres is 27. He's in the form of his life at the right club at exactly the right time. If Arsenal win the Premier League title this season — and they're six points clear with three games left — he'll have played a significant part in it. If they go on to face PSG in the Champions League final on May 30 and come away with the trophy, his name will be remembered alongside the club's great European campaigns. What's already happened this season is genuinely impressive from a player who wasn't even in the Arsenal conversation two years ago.
