FIFA Rejects France's Appeal Over Michael Olise Yellow Card — Bayern Star Walks Tightrope Before Morocco Quarter-Final

Michael Olise will go into France's 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final against Morocco on Thursday carrying a yellow card — and that will not change after FIFA turned down France's appeal to have the caution expunged from their records. Coach Didier Deschamps confirmed the news on Wednesday, describing the decision as a blow but one the squad must simply get on with.

The Incident That Started It All

The yellow card in question was shown to Olise in the 97th minute of France's 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the last 16. In a heated moment as the match wound down, the Bayern Munich winger became involved in an altercation with Paraguayan midfielder Matias Galarza. Video replays suggested that Olise had done little more than grasp Galarza's jersey, yet Galarza went to the ground and the referee produced the card.

France's football federation moved swiftly to challenge the decision, submitting an official appeal to FIFA's disciplinary committee. Their argument was clear — that the yellow card was disproportionate given what was actually seen in the replays. Galarza's fall appeared dramatic, and the federation felt a strong case existed to have the caution withdrawn.

FIFA Stands Firm

FIFA, however, did not agree. The ruling came through early Wednesday morning, with Deschamps delivering the verdict bluntly: "There was no change when it comes to Olise's yellow card. We received FIFA's decision this morning that the yellow card was maintained."

The implications are significant. Should Olise collect a second yellow card during Thursday's quarter-final against Morocco, he would be suspended for a potential semi-final. It is the last thing France need heading into a match against a Morocco side that will be physical, well-organised, and ready to test France in every area of the pitch.

A Tightrope Act for Deschamps

The question now is whether Deschamps adjusts his approach to protect Olise, or trusts the 23-year-old to manage the situation himself. Olise has been one of France's best performers throughout the tournament, combining pace, skill and directness in a way that has repeatedly troubled opposition defences. Taking him out of the equation — or neutering his aggression — would be a significant sacrifice.

The Morocco quarter-final is already shaping up to be one of the most eagerly anticipated ties of the competition. The Atlas Lions, who famously reached the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, have shown throughout this tournament that they are more than capable of causing upsets. Their defensive organisation is among the best remaining in the competition, and with Olise needing to be on his best behaviour, France face a delicate balancing act.

Olise's World Cup Journey

Olise moved to Bayern Munich from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2024 and has gone from strength to strength since. His performances for France at this World Cup have underlined just how important he has become to the national setup. Losing him for a potential semi-final — whether through suspension or through a more cautious performance to avoid cards — would be a real blow to Les Bleus' hopes of going deep in the tournament.
