Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a club-record deal worth up to £100 million. The Italian midfielder joins Roberto De Zerbi's side after an initial £80 million bid was rejected, with the final package totalling £92.5 million plus £7.5 million in achievable add-ons — Spurs' most expensive signing in their history.

De Zerbi the Deciding Factor

Tonali was not short of suitors. Manchester City registered interest, and several clubs across Europe monitored his situation closely. But from the moment Tottenham came calling, the Italian's mind was made up. Speaking after the deal was confirmed, Tonali said De Zerbi had played a "huge role" in his decision, praising the Italian's attacking philosophy and ambition. Personal factors — "lifestyle and family" — also pulled him toward London.

De Zerbi has long coveted a technically elite box-to-box midfielder with physical presence and an eye for goal, and Tonali fits that blueprint exactly. The Italian can dominate possession, drive forward, and win aerial duels — a complete midfield package that gives Tottenham genuine depth and quality in the engine room.

A Double Blow for Newcastle

Tonali's departure, coming so soon after Bruno Guimaraes joined Arsenal for £75 million, leaves Newcastle with a yawning hole in the centre of their midfield. The Magpies bought Tonali from AC Milan for £55 million in 2023 and are banking a significant profit, but the football logic is devastating — two of their three most important outfield players have departed in the same summer, leaving new head coach Matthias Jaissle in urgent need of reinforcements before the season starts.

Micky van de Ven: Transfer Window Context

Tottenham's summer has otherwise centred on locking down their best players. Micky van de Ven recently signed a new long-term deal, providing the backline with stability. Adding Tonali to a squad that already has Mathys Tel and Matheus Fernandes suggests De Zerbi has serious ambitions for 2026–27.
