Tottenham Hotspur have smashed their transfer record by landing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United for a fee of £100 million, confirming what had been one of the summer's worst-kept secrets. The Italy midfielder, who turns 31 in May, will wear the No.8 shirt at Spurs after signing a six-year deal that runs to 2032.

The deal — worth £92.5 million up front with a further £7.5 million in performance-related bonuses — eclipses every previous Tottenham purchase and underlines head coach Roberto De Zerbi's determination to build a squad capable of challenging at the very top of the Premier League.

De Zerbi factor 'huge' in Tonali's decision

Tonali made no secret of the fact that De Zerbi played a central role in his choice of destination. The pair know each other well from Italian football, where De Zerbi's reputation as one of Europe's most progressive coaches is long established. Spurs confirmed that the manager's vision and tactical philosophy were a "huge" factor in persuading Tonali to choose north London over other interested clubs.

"I know Roberto and I know what he demands of his players," Tonali said after completing the move. "That was one of the biggest reasons I am here. I want to compete for trophies and I believe in what this club is building."

Newcastle's summer of sales continues

For Newcastle, this is another eye-catching departure in a summer that has already seen Bruno Guimaraes leave for Arsenal (£75 million) and Anthony Gordon head to Barcelona (€80 million). Add Tonali's £100 million fee and the Magpies have banked well over £300 million in player sales since June — a staggering figure that reflects both the Profit and Sustainability Rules they must navigate and the exceptional quality of the squad Eddie Howe assembled on Tyneside.

Tonali had been magnificent during his time at Newcastle following a difficult debut season disrupted by a ten-month betting ban. Since returning to action in the autumn of 2024, the midfielder had played some of the best football of his career, running games with a blend of physicality, technique and leadership that placed him among the very best in his position in Europe.

What Tottenham are getting

De Zerbi will use Tonali as the engine of his midfield — a box-to-box operator who can dominate possession and apply pressure without the ball. The Italian's reading of the game is elite, and he brings the kind of authoritative presence in central areas that Spurs have been missing for years. On wages reported at over £275,000 per week, Tottenham are backing their conviction with serious money.

The No.8 shirt carries weight at Spurs — worn previously by the likes of Gus Poyet and Steven Pienaar — and Tonali inherits it as the centrepiece of what De Zerbi hopes will be a genuine title challenge. With Champions League football secured last season, Tottenham believe the pieces are finally falling into place.

Pending international clearance, Tonali could make his Spurs debut as early as the opening weekend of the Premier League season.
