Virgil van Dijk is ready to leave Liverpool this summer and an approach from Galatasaray is believed to be imminent, according to reports out of Turkey. The Dutch centre-back, who has been Liverpool's most important defensive player for the past seven years, has grown frustrated with a disappointing season at Anfield and is considering terminating his contract rather than seeing out its final year. It would be one of the most significant departures from English football in years — and it is far from the only major exit Liverpool are bracing for this summer.

Why Van Dijk Is Ready to Go

Liverpool have endured a miserable campaign. The club sit well below Arsenal in the title race and have dropped points repeatedly at Anfield — eight times this season — in a way that would have been unthinkable even two years ago. Van Dijk, now 34, is said to be frustrated with the standard of performances around him and is looking for a new challenge rather than another difficult rebuild. Reports in Turkey suggest Galatasaray's president is prepared to make a personal approach and that Van Dijk is receptive to the idea. For a player of his standing, another year of mid-table football in England holds little appeal.

The Bigger Picture: Liverpool's Summer Exodus

Van Dijk's potential exit is not happening in isolation. Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson are also reported to be leaving Anfield this summer, which would mark an extraordinary clearing out of the core group that won the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020. Liverpool must rebuild almost from scratch — new defensive leaders, new attacking focal points, a new midfield identity — and they must do so while competing with clubs who have more recent momentum and financial flexibility. It is the kind of overhaul that takes several transfer windows to complete.

What Galatasaray Offer Van Dijk

Galatasaray are one of the wealthiest clubs in Turkey and regularly compete in the Champions League. They can offer Van Dijk a financially competitive package in a genuine football culture that will not feel like a step down in the way that Gulf destinations might. The 34-year-old, if he terminates his Liverpool contract, would be a free agent — meaning Galatasaray could negotiate personal terms without a transfer fee. That makes the deal very achievable from the Turkish club's perspective. Whether Van Dijk ultimately moves there or opts for another European destination remains to be determined, but the door to his Anfield exit is now clearly open.

Liverpool's Urgent Priority

Whoever takes charge of Liverpool's rebuild this summer faces a daunting task. The academy pipeline is strong — players like Ben Doak and Rio Ngumoha give the club optimism for the future — but the senior squad needs experienced leaders to bridge the gap immediately. Losing Van Dijk, Salah and Robertson in the same window would leave a void that money alone cannot quickly fill. The next chapter of Liverpool's story begins this summer. From where they currently stand, it is going to be a long road back to the top.

Transfer context: Virgil van Dijk, 34, centre-back, Liverpool. Contract expires summer 2027. Galatasaray interested, personal approach expected according to Turkish media. Status: unconfirmed. Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson also reported to be leaving Anfield this summer.
