Darwin Núñez is set to return to the Premier League as a free agent this summer, with Chelsea and Newcastle United both monitoring the Uruguayan striker's situation closely. Núñez left Liverpool for Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal in a £46 million deal last summer, but the move turned sour quickly — he was de-registered from the squad in February to make way for a new signing and has been frozen out of the team ever since. He has now reached an agreement with Al-Hilal to terminate his contract mutually, which opens the door to a return to English football for one of the most physically imposing strikers of his generation.

What Went Wrong in Saudi Arabia

By all accounts, Núñez's time in Riyadh was a disaster from almost the moment it began. The high-intensity pressing game that had made him dangerous at Liverpool simply did not translate to the slower, more passive rhythms of Saudi football, and when Al-Hilal needed to free up squad space, he was the obvious casualty. To be de-registered mid-season — effectively sidelined for months — is a humiliation that few players at his level have experienced, and the 26-year-old is said to be keen to get back to European football and prove himself again. The good news for interested clubs is that he will cost them nothing in transfer fees.

Why Chelsea Are Interested

Chelsea have been monitoring the situation since at least March and the logic is straightforward. They need a centre-forward who can provide a physical threat, press high up the pitch, and hold the ball under pressure — and Núñez's profile fits that brief. The Blues have had inconsistent goalscoring from their striker positions all season, and a free signing with Premier League experience removes the financial risk that would normally be attached to a player of his calibre. Confirming terms and wages will be the main discussion. Chelsea are not the only interested party.

Newcastle's Position

Newcastle United have also been linked with Núñez, and given their likely need to replace Anthony Gordon's dynamism and energy if the winger departs this summer, a physical forward who can add a different dimension to the attack makes sense. Reports from Newcastle's direction suggest they need to bring in reinforcements rather than lose key players without adequate replacements. Núñez — for free — would represent exactly the kind of short-term, low-risk opportunity that a recruitment department constrained by PSR considerations can take advantage of.

The Risk Worth Taking

Núñez's record at Liverpool was not as clean as his admirers would suggest — he was at times maddeningly inconsistent and missed chances that should have been straightforward. But he also scored important goals, worked without the ball tirelessly, and caused problems for defenders with his pace and power that few forwards in Europe can match. At 26, and available for nothing, the reward for getting him right far outweighs the risk of another disappointing spell. Whichever club wins the race will be getting one of the most intriguing footballers of the current generation at a bargain price.

Transfer context: Darwin Núñez, 26, striker, Uruguay. Contract mutually terminated with Al-Hilal (Saudi Pro League). Available as free agent summer 2026. Interested clubs: Chelsea, Newcastle United, Juventus. No transfer fee required.
