Ryan Gravenberch gave Liverpool a flying start inside six minutes on Saturday evening, but a stunning Enzo Fernandez free-kick on the 35th minute sent the sides in level at half-time and that is how it stayed. Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea — a result that satisfied neither club, prompted boos from the Anfield crowd at full-time, and left both sides with real questions heading into the final weeks of the season. Liverpool's Champions League qualification push takes another hit. Chelsea halt a run of six straight league defeats, though a single point against a top-four rival will not transform a season that has gone badly wrong.

Gravenberch Sets the Tone Early

Ryan Gravenberch has been one of the standout performers in Liverpool's engine room all season and he wasted no time making his presence felt on Saturday. Just six minutes in, the Dutch midfielder surged forward from a midfield press, received a short pass from Alexis Mac Allister, and drove a composed finish past Robert Sanchez at his near post. The Anfield crowd was immediately alive, the tempo high, and Liverpool looked well placed to take all three points against a Chelsea side coming in on a desperate run of form. What followed in the next half-hour was unexpected.

Enzo Fernandez Silences the Kop

Chelsea had been limited to scrappy transitions and long-range efforts in the opening period, but in the 35th minute Enzo Fernandez stepped up to a free-kick 25 yards from goal and curled it into the top corner with his left foot — leaving Caoimhin Kelleher with no chance. It was a world-class set-piece, the kind of goal that ends up in season highlight reels. For Fernandez personally, it ended a difficult run of quiet performances and reminded everyone why Chelsea paid a British record fee to bring him from Benfica. In one moment, he looked like the player the club had always hoped he would become.

Second Half That Went Nowhere

Liverpool pushed after the interval and had the better of the second 45 minutes without ever truly threatening to find a winner. Mohamed Salah cut inside twice on his favoured right foot and forced smart saves from Sanchez. Cody Gakpo headed wide from a corner with 20 minutes left. Chelsea, to their credit, held their defensive shape and looked dangerous on the counter through Cole Palmer, who forced a good stop from Kelleher late on. Neither side could find the decisive moment and the game faded to a frustrating conclusion, with the home faithful making their feelings heard at the final whistle.

What It Means for Both Clubs

For Liverpool, this is now the eighth time they have dropped points at Anfield in the league this season — an uncharacteristic record for a club that has historically treated the ground as a fortress. Their Champions League qualification is still not confirmed and with just two games remaining, they cannot afford further slip-ups. For Chelsea, ending a six-game losing streak is a small positive to carry forward, and Enzo's free-kick is a reminder of the quality that exists in that squad. But one point against a team above them cannot hide a season that has fallen well short of the ambition and spending that preceded it.

Match facts: Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea, Anfield, 9 May 2026. Goals: Gravenberch 6' (Liverpool), Enzo Fernandez 35' (Chelsea). Attendance: 60,288. Liverpool 4th on 68 points; Chelsea 10th on 52 points. Liverpool's wait for a Champions League spot continues with 2 games remaining.
