Manchester United are close to their first major summer signing, and it tells you a fair bit about what Ruben Amorim wants from his rebuild. Atalanta midfielder Ederson has agreed personal terms with the club — a contract until 2031 worth around €5 million per year — and United are now preparing a bid in the region of €45 to €50 million to get the deal over the line. The 26-year-old Brazilian is Amorim's preferred choice to replace Casemiro, who is leaving at the end of the season.

Why Ederson makes sense for United

Ederson — not the Manchester City goalkeeper, but the central midfielder who has made Atalanta one of the most effective pressing teams in Serie A — is a different kind of profile to what United have had in the middle of the park. He's aggressive, covers ground relentlessly, and wins the ball back in areas that actually matter. Casemiro was a holding midfielder who slowed things down and recycled. Ederson is someone who can do the defensive work and then carry the ball forward. If Amorim wants a higher tempo in midfield — and based on what he built at Sporting, he does — this move makes sense.

The Atalanta connection and what could go wrong

There's an interesting angle here: John Murtough, who previously worked with Manchester United, now works for Atalanta in a development role. Having someone who knows both clubs on the inside isn't nothing in a transfer negotiation. That said, Atalanta don't sell cheap. Ederson has a contract, he's 26, and he's been excellent for years. Any club trying to get him below market rate will get short shrift. United are reportedly prepared to meet the asking price, which suggests INEOS have signed off on this one properly.

What it signals for the summer

Getting a midfield signing done early says something about how seriously United are approaching this window. They've spent recent summers stumbling into deals in August under pressure. Ederson being agreed in principle before June suggests a clearer plan. Casemiro out, Ederson in — it's a younger, higher-energy replacement for a position that was a real problem last season. More will follow. United still need work at right back, up front, and probably in wide areas. But starting with the engine room isn't the worst place to begin.

Transfer context: Player: Ederson (Honorato Cardoso) | Age: 26 | Current club: Atalanta (Serie A) | Agreed terms: 5 years, ~€5m/year | Expected fee: €45–50m | Status: Personal terms agreed, club-to-club deal pending.
