Everton are into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after beating Wolves 1-0 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, and the goal came from a substitute who had not scored for the club in 13 months.
Charly Alcaraz came on, jinked his way inside the box in the 80th minute and finished calmly. His previous goal for Everton was against Mansfield, in this same competition, back in August last year.
A quiet night with one moment in it
David Moyes made six changes from the goalless draw with Tottenham. Wolves made nine from their Championship win over Sheffield United. The football that followed was about what you would expect from those two team sheets.
Joao Virginia was the reason it stayed goalless for so long. The Portuguese keeper spent seven years at Everton before leaving for Sporting in 2025, and he was excellent against them, pushing away a close-range Thierno Barry header before the break and later denying Brennan Johnson after the forward had broken through. James Garner shot wide, Michael Keane headed just wide, and Virginia ended up as the official player of the match despite finishing on the losing side.
Wolves lose Jimenez
The visitors started brighter. Then Raul Jimenez went off injured in the 37th minute, which is a problem for a side already struggling. His replacement Adam Armstrong got a one-on-one just before the hour and Jordan Pickford saved it low.
Jack Grealish started his first Everton match since January, following his loan return from Manchester City, and lasted 76 minutes before Tyrique George replaced him.
Newcastle next
Everton are unbeaten after six matches this season. They host Newcastle United in the fourth round in the week commencing 26 October, and there was a decent crowd for it, with prime minister Andy Burnham and his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney among them.
Before that comes Ipswich Town at home on Saturday. Wolves play West Brom on Sunday in a West Midlands derby they could badly use.
