Andoni Iraola is still unbeaten as Liverpool manager. He is also still waiting for a performance that looks like the team he was hired to build. Fulham came to Anfield on Saturday, defended with their heads up rather than their backs to the wall, and took a 0-0 draw that felt closer to a win.
Money on the Pitch, Nothing on the Scoreboard
Bradley Barcola, Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak all started. Between them they cost north of £300m and between them they produced almost nothing that troubled Bernd Leno. Liverpool had 56 per cent of the ball, twelve shots and three on target. Fulham had ten shots and four on target. Read those numbers without the badges attached and you would not guess which side was at home.
Leno's Two Big Moments
There were chances. Victor Munoz got a free header from a corner and Leno somehow clawed it off his own line. Alexis Mac Allister rolled a pass into Dominik Szoboszlai, whose strike was powerful and straight at the goalkeeper. That was the pattern: Liverpool arrived in the right areas often enough, then made the wrong choice at the end of the move.
Arbeloa's Fulham Are Coming
Alvaro Arbeloa will not be sentimental about the ground he used to play on. His side are still without a league win, but this was the first point and the first performance that suggested one is near. Fulham pressed in organised bursts, defended the box in numbers and carried a genuine threat on the counter.
Four games in, Liverpool have not lost and have not convinced. Iraola's ideas take time to land, and Anfield has been patient before. The question is how long dropped points at home can be filed under patience.
