Troy Parrott was on the pitch at the time, which is the detail that makes this latest break-in look less like bad luck and more like planning. A group of masked men entered the Republic of Ireland striker's house in the El Zaudin estate in Bormujos, on the edge of Seville, while he was on as a second-half substitute in Real Betis's 5-2 defeat by Barcelona. Spanish media report that the gang left without taking anything. The Civil Guard has opened an investigation.

Domestic CCTV recorded them going in and coming out. Beyond that, little has been established publicly, and no arrests have been made.

Antony's house was targeted the same way

What makes the Parrott case harder to shrug off is that it happened barely a week after a Betis team-mate went through something similar. Antony's home was broken into while he was playing for the club in their Champions League win over Porto. One of the Brazilian winger's sons was in the house at the time. Betis later confirmed that nobody was hurt.

Antony wrote about it on Instagram afterwards, and the part that landed hardest was not about possessions. "What should have been a beautiful night ended in anger and frustration. My house was robbed," he wrote. "The most infuriating thing is not just the loss of belongings, but the loss of security in a place where we should feel most protected, and seeing the unease in my family's eyes."

A pattern across Andalusia

These are not isolated cases. Five hooded men broke into the La Juliana home of former Sevilla goalkeeper Sergio Rico and his wife, Alba Silva, in an incident reported last Monday, holding family members at gunpoint while they took watches and jewellery. In 2023 Sergio Ramos's house was raided while his children and the people looking after them were inside, during Sevilla's European tie against Lens.

A Civil Guard spokesperson in Seville has confirmed that officers are looking at a run of burglaries across the Aljarafe region. Detectives are examining whether one organised group is behind them, working from fixture lists to know exactly when a given house will be empty of its owner. Put like that, the timing of the Parrott raid stops being a coincidence at all.

What happens now

Nothing has been resolved. No arrests, no recovered property in the Parrott case because nothing appears to have been taken, and an investigation that is still at the stage of establishing whether these incidents are connected. Players in the region are being targeted at the one moment when their whereabouts are a matter of public record, which is a problem no amount of private security solves on its own.

Parrott and his team-mates have a football season to get back to in the meantime, and after a 5-2 defeat by Barcelona there is plenty for Betis to work on. It is a strange thing to describe as the easier part of the week.

Story facts: Masked intruders entered Troy Parrott's home in the El Zaudin estate, Bormujos, near Seville, while he was playing as a second-half substitute in Real Betis's 5-2 defeat by Barcelona. CCTV recorded the group entering and leaving; nothing was reported stolen. The Civil Guard is investigating a series of burglaries in the Aljarafe region and no arrests have been made.
