Michael Carrick went to Elland Road needing a win and left with a point he will not be able to do much with. Manchester United led through Bryan Mbeumo before half-time, then lost the lead to a Dominic Calvert-Lewin goal shortly after the break, and a 1-1 draw with Leeds extended their winless run to six games in all competitions.
A game of yellow cards
It was a feisty start, with Lisandro Martinez starting for United in the middle of a week in which he was fined for criticising the club's hierarchy. There were more bookings than shots in the opening spell, Bruno Fernandes and Gabriel Gudmundsson both cautioned for poorly timed challenges. The game came alive before the half-hour. Mbeumo was unmarked for a free header and missed the target, shortly after Senne Lammens made a full-stretch save to deny Nico Elvedi. Mbeumo made up for it about ten minutes before half-time, battling past James Justin to meet an excellent pass into the box.
Calvert-Lewin finds the loose ball
Leeds levelled shortly after the interval. Tarik Muharemovic was first to a corner, and Calvert-Lewin beat Mbeumo to the loose ball. It was his seventh goal in his last seven matches at Elland Road and his fourth in seven league games this season. Fernandes pulled a shot wide and Anton Stach could not keep a first-time strike down, and neither side found a winner.
Where this leaves Carrick
United are 13th and have won just once in the league this season, against Ipswich in August, their fewest wins after seven games of a top-flight campaign for 40 years. Carrick got a two-year deal only five months ago after replacing Ruben Amorim, who was sacked following an explosive news conference at this same ground in January. He is not in must-win territory yet. There were positives: Carlos Baleba looked cool in his first league start for the club, and the defence held together until one lapse at a set piece. Carrick pointed to the unity his players showed.
Leeds keep their home run going
For the first time since September 2002, Leeds went into a league meeting with United above them in the table, and they are now three points clear in seventh. They have gone eight league games unbeaten at home, their longest such run since December 2001. Daniel Farke called his team dominant, though they still have not beaten United at Elland Road since 2002.
