Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona meet at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night in the tie of the Champions League's third matchday, and the two men most likely to decide it have already said as much themselves. Pedri and Vitinha were both put in front of the microphones on Monday, and both arrived at the same conclusion: whoever controls the ball controls the evening.
Two teams arriving in dangerous form
PSG come into it as European champions and have not lost a continental match in 12 attempts. Barcelona come into it on 11 straight wins in all competitions, with 48 goals scored in that run. Those are the kind of numbers that usually mean one of the streaks is about to end, and the Parc des Princes has not been a forgiving place to visit.
Hansi Flick's side do carry one awkward statistic. Barcelona have gone 17 European matches without a clean sheet. Against this attack, in this stadium, that is not a detail you want sitting in the background.
Pedri points at the man behind him
Pedri's explanation of why he has been playing so freely was generous rather than self-regarding. He credited Rodri's work holding and organising the midfield for giving him licence to push forward, saying the knowledge that someone is always behind him changes what he can attempt. He was equally complimentary about his opposite number, describing Vitinha as a genuinely different kind of player and one of the best anywhere at creating and retaining possession.
Then came the line that doubles as a prediction. "Whoever has the ball tomorrow will determine the course of the game," Pedri said.
Vitinha is not worried about Yamal, he says
Vitinha was asked, as PSG players tend to be these days, whether his team fear Lamine Yamal. He said no, while calling the teenager one of the best players in the world right now and pointing out that Barcelona are more than one winger. He also talked about adjusting the height of PSG's press during the match rather than committing to one approach, on the basis that space tends to open up as a game stretches.
That is the real question of the night. Barcelona will want the ball high and quickly; PSG have the midfielders to take it off them and the pace to punish the space left behind. Flick's team have scored freely enough this season that a 1-0 does not feel likely from either side, and with Barcelona's clean-sheet problem unresolved, a 2-2 in Paris would surprise nobody here.
