Spurs Host Arsenal in a North London Derby Both Sides Need

Two teams walk into Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at lunchtime on Saturday with the same problem and opposite symptoms. Arsenal cannot score. Tottenham cannot stop conceding. Six games into the Women's Super League season, a north London derby that would normally be about bragging rights is about something harder to recover from, because the three clubs at the top have already started to disappear over the horizon.

Arsenal have five goals in six matches, a tally matched only by the worst attacks in the division. Spurs have shipped 12 in their past two. One of those numbers has to give.

Slegers has the chances and none of the finishing

Renee Slegers is under pressure, which would have sounded absurd in August. Arsenal have not won since the opening day at Brighton. They drew at home with promoted Birmingham and with Crystal Palace, lost at Chelsea and at Manchester City, and sit eighth on the same points as West Ham, Aston Villa and Palace. Champions League qualification is nine points away already.

The frustrating part, from her side of it, is that the underlying work is being done. Arsenal have hit the woodwork five times, more than anyone. They have the joint-most touches in the opposition box, 283, and the third-highest number of chances created, 93. Their shot conversion rate is 5.9 per cent, comfortably the worst in the league, against Manchester City's 16.7. With Alessia Russo, Stina Blackstenius and Olivia Smith in the squad, that is not a talent problem.

"You can't question the commitment of the players, but they are trying to walk it in," Ellen White said on the BBC's Women's Football Weekly podcast. "They are creating opportunities but look a little lost, a bit desperate. It's going to be a very uncomfortable day. I don't think a draw is enough." Slegers has rotated hard looking for an answer, keeping the same front four only once in all competitions and making more substitutions than any other manager. Losing Mariona Caldentey for up to 10 weeks with a hamstring problem has not helped.

Spurs have the record against them and a point to make

Martin Ho's side started the season with 10 points from four games and two goals conceded. Then came 6-1 against London City Lionesses and 6-2 against Chelsea, and the mood changed quickly. Ho is refusing to dress it up. "We're not at that level yet," he said. "People don't like to hear it but it's the honest truth. We need to understand and accept that, because if we don't, we're putting unrealistic expectations on ourselves."

History is not on their side either. Spurs have won one of their last 13 WSL meetings with Arsenal, though they did hold them to a goalless draw at home last season. What they do have is a front line that finishes: Signe Gaupset, Olivia Holdt and Kirsty Hanson have all scored at least twice already, and Victoria Pelova has five, which is as many as the entire Arsenal team.

Pelova arrived from Arsenal in the summer, and her explanation for the upturn is simple. "I didn't get a lot of minutes last year with Arsenal," she told BBC Sport. "I get more freedom here and I feel full trust from my team-mates and the staff." Holdt, who scored a hat-trick against Palace in September, likes the venue as much as the fixture. "It's amazing we have the possibility to play there. We'll feel it in the game with all the fans supporting us and not Arsenal."

What it is actually worth

Manchester City, Chelsea and London City have put real distance between themselves and the chasing pack, so this is a game about fourth place and the Champions League spots behind it, not the title. A Tottenham win would be their second in 14 against Arsenal and would leave Slegers answering questions she has never had to answer at this club. An Arsenal win settles very little but buys time, which right now she would take.

Prediction: Arsenal have been the better team in most of the games they have failed to win, and Spurs have just conceded 12 in two. Arsenal to edge it 2-1, with the first goal mattering more than usual.
