Sancho Weighs £10,000-a-Week Getafe Offer After Man Utd Exit

Five years ago Jadon Sancho was the most sought-after young winger in Europe and Manchester United paid £73m to get him out of Borussia Dortmund. He is now weighing up a contract at Getafe worth a reported £10,000 a week, until the end of the season, having been released by United in the summer. The Telegraph reports he has not said no, but he wants to sit down with head coach Jose Bordalas before he decides anything.

At Old Trafford he was reportedly on £250,000 a week. The arithmetic on that drop is not complicated and neither is what it signifies.

How the fall happened

The first two Premier League seasons after the 2021 move never produced the numbers the fee implied. A loan back to Dortmund revived him briefly without fixing anything permanently. Chelsea took him in 2024-25 and ended it by paying a £5m penalty clause rather than meeting a £25m obligation to buy, which is a fairly blunt verdict from a club that had the option. Aston Villa took a turn last season and showed no interest in making it permanent. United let him go for nothing.

He is 26. That is the part that keeps this story alive rather than closing it, because players have rebuilt from worse at that age, and the clubs circling Sancho now are circling precisely because the price has collapsed.

Getafe are not a calm place to land

If he signs, he joins a club sitting 15th in La Liga with two wins from nine games and a public argument running between the manager and the president. Bordalas went first, criticising the board over a squad he says cannot cover league and Conference League commitments at once. "I feel deceived because what has been promised year after year hasn't been fulfilled," he said. "I've been warning about this since May. It's been proven that we don't have the squad for it."

Angel Torres, the Getafe president, responded on Cadena SER by effectively inviting him to leave. "He signed because he wanted to. Anyway, he's free to leave," Torres said. "To say that I deceived him, you have to be as shameless as stone to tell me, after 30 years, that I deceived him. What he needs to do is respect the players."

The alternative is nothing

That is the context Sancho would be walking into, and it explains why the meeting with Bordalas matters more than the wage. A winger trying to rebuild his confidence needs a manager who wants him and a plan for where he plays. Neither is guaranteed at a club whose coach is openly at war with the people who sign the cheques.

And yet. Top-flight clubs have had a summer and most of an autumn to take a chance on him and none has. If he turns Getafe down he stays a free agent with no obvious route back, which is the real pressure in this negotiation and the reason a £10,000-a-week offer is on the table at all.

Transfer context: Jadon Sancho, 26, winger, free agent after being released by Manchester United this summer. Getafe have offered a short-term deal until the end of the 2026-27 season worth a reported £10,000 a week; he earned a reported £250,000 a week at United, who signed him from Borussia Dortmund for £73m in 2021. Loan spells at Dortmund, Chelsea (2024-25) and Aston Villa did not become permanent. Getafe are 15th in La Liga with two wins from nine. Sources: GOAL, The Telegraph, Cadena SER.
