Manchester City beat Norwich City 5-0 in the Carabao Cup third round on Thursday night, and by the time the Etihad had emptied almost nobody was talking about the scoreline. They were talking about a 17-year-old who had never started a professional match before and who finished it with two goals and the man-of-the-match award.
Floyd Samba played the full ninety minutes. He opened the scoring with a flicked header at a point when City were making very little headway, turned to the part of the stand where his family were sitting and blew them a kiss. Later he curled in a second. Enzo Maresca had picked him at centre-forward, a position Samba told his manager he had never occupied in his life.
A debut that rewrote Friday's back pages
The timing was awkward for someone else. All week the Manchester football story had belonged to JJ Gabriel, the 15-year-old forward whose exit from Manchester United has filled column after column. Thursday ended that run. Samba's name went to the top of the cuttings instead.
"I knew there would be an opportunity to get some minutes for the first time with the first team," he told BBC Radio 5 Live afterwards. "To get a debut like that is mind-blowing. I couldn't believe it myself, but that is just the beginning. I have got a big career ahead of me."
He also said the senior players had sought him out before kick-off with advice that boiled down to two words: be yourself. It seems to have landed.
Maresca is pleased, and careful
City's manager was complimentary without getting carried away, which is roughly the tone you would expect from a man who has to manage expectations around a teenager for the next five years.
"I am satisfied not just for the goals but for the performance too," Maresca said. "I asked him in the last three, four days, when I decided to play him as nine, and he said he never played there. He is not a nine for sure, but he was good. He is young, full of energy, strong, can finish, can set players up. He made some good decisions in the first half. I am happy but they are young and we have to go slowly, slowly."
Samba joined City's academy at under-nine level and only really forced himself into the conversation last season, when he scored 24 goals and set up 10 more for the under-18s. The pick of them was a curled free-kick in the FA Youth Cup final against Manchester United in May. Maresca promoted him to the senior group over the summer on the back of that year.
A very different player to his father
Anyone who watched the Premier League in the late 2000s will know the surname. Floyd is the son of Christopher Samba, the centre-back who made 171 top-flight appearances for Blackburn and QPR and another 12 in the Championship with Aston Villa. Christopher was a towering, no-nonsense defender. His son is quick, light on his feet and plays as far up the pitch as it is possible to play. Tyrone, Floyd's older brother, is also on City's books in the youth setup.
Christopher was in the stadium on Thursday. Chris Sutton, who spent part of his own career at Norwich, described the night on 5 Live as an absolutely brilliant moment for the family, and added the obvious caveat: Samba is not going to displace Erling Haaland any time soon. What he has done is give Maresca a reason to trust him a little further.
The jump itself is the hard part, and Samba knows it. "Coming from under-21s to first-team training, that is a big jump," he said. "The sessions are more tiring, you have to run more. They demand more of you and you have to cope with it."
