For forty-five minutes at the Dragao, Porto looked like they had worked Manchester City out. Diogo Costa saved five times before the interval and the home crowd were still loud. Then Erling Haaland scored inside two minutes of the restart and the evening changed shape completely.
City won 2-0 on Tuesday night, and the scoreline flattered Francesco Farioli's side. Porto did not register a single shot on target across the ninety minutes. Their expected goals figure finished at 0.22 against City's 2.31, which is about as one-sided as a Champions League fixture between two clubs of this size gets.
Haaland Punished a Half-Second of Hesitation
The opener came from Enzo Fernandez, whose cross found the far side of the six-yard box unguarded. Haaland arrived, guided it in, and Porto had no answer. It was the kind of goal City have scored a hundred times, and Porto had spent the entire first half preventing exactly that.
The second arrived in stoppage time. Rayan Ait-Nouri cut the ball back from the left and Haaland hit it first time. No touch to settle, no adjustment. Two chances of that quality, two goals, which is the arithmetic that has decided a lot of City nights over the past four seasons.
Farioli Will Not Enjoy the Video
Porto had not lost at home in 2026 before this. Farioli set his team up to stay compact and to make City work through the middle, and for a half it held. The problem was what happened when it stopped holding. Once City were ahead, Porto had no plan to get back into the game because they had not built one, and there is no shame in that against this opponent, but there is not much to take from it either.
Costa was the only Porto player who finished the night with credit. Five first-half saves kept the tie alive well past the point where it should have died.
Maresca's Perfect Run Goes On
Enzo Maresca has now won every match he has managed at Manchester City this season, in every competition. The Italian took over in the summer and the transition has been almost invisible, which is the highest compliment you can pay a new manager at a club built to keep winning regardless of who is in the dugout.
City travel to Old Trafford this weekend for the Manchester derby. On this evidence, Michael Carrick's United will need something close to a perfect performance.
