One of the more dramatic departures of this summer's transfer window is now all but done. Tottenham Hotspur have reached a verbal agreement to sell club captain Cristian Romero to Inter Milan for a fee of €40 million, with the Argentine defender eager to move to Serie A and start a new chapter in his career.
Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio held direct talks with Tottenham and the clubs have reached an agreement in principle. Personal terms have yet to be fully finalised, but the deal is expected to be structured as a loan with a mandatory purchase clause, rather than an immediate permanent transfer.
Romero turns 27 in November and has been at Spurs since joining from Juventus in 2021. He was handed the armband when Son Heung-min departed, a reflection of how highly the club once valued him. But the past 12 months saw that relationship deteriorate sharply.
Four suspensions during the 2025-26 campaign — the most of any Tottenham player — damaged his standing with both the coaching staff and sections of the fanbase. Sources say the defender has made it clear he wants a move, and Inter's interest gave both parties a clean way out of a complicated situation.
Tottenham's summer business made the departure easier to stomach. They already signed Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton and added Marcos Senesi on a free, effectively rebuilding the defensive unit before selling their captain rather than after. That planning has removed a lot of the pressure from the deal.
For Inter, Romero is exactly the sort of combative, technically capable centre-back their system demands. He brings genuine Premier League toughness, Champions League experience, and World Cup-winning credentials with Argentina — and at €40 million, the Italian giants feel they are getting fair value for a player still in his prime years.
Should the deal go through as expected in the coming days, it will close the book on what many will consider an underachieving chapter for a player who, on his best days, looked like one of the finest defenders in world football.
