Fulham have broken the British record for a Northern Ireland player, completing the signing of midfielder Shea Charles from Southampton in a deal worth up to £30m. The 22-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year contract at Craven Cottage and becomes the most expensive Northern Ireland footballer in history — shattering the previous record of £15m paid by Newcastle United for Jamal Lewis back in 2020.
The transfer fee is structured as £26m upfront, with a further £4m available in add-ons. Charles also attracted interest from Leeds United, but the lure of Premier League football under new Fulham manager Alvaro Arbeloa proved too strong to resist.
Record-Breaking Move to Craven Cottage
Charles is Fulham's third signing since the appointment of Arbeloa — the former Real Madrid defender who took over the reins at the club following Marco Silva's departure to Benfica. The Cottagers have clearly meant business in this window, with Charles joining Spanish striker Gonzalo Garcia (signed from Real Madrid for around £34m) and midfielder Cesar Palacios (also from Real Madrid) through the door. That puts Charles as Fulham's third most expensive signing on record, behind Garcia and winger Kevin, who arrived from Shakhtar Donetsk in the previous summer for a similar fee.
In practical terms, Charles steps in to fill the void left by Sasa Lukic, who departed for Ipswich Town in a £9m deal last week. The Serbia international's departure has opened the door for Charles to make a Premier League name for himself — and few doubt he has the ability to do exactly that.
A Career That Began at Manchester City
Charles came through the academy at Manchester City before making the move to Southampton in the summer of 2023. At St Mary's, he developed into one of the more complete midfielders in the Championship, combining defensive reliability with intelligent distribution — qualities that drew admiring glances from clubs well above the Saints in the food chain.
His form at international level has been equally impressive. The Belfast-born midfielder — who was born in England but qualifies for Northern Ireland — has accumulated 35 senior caps, a significant total for a player of his age and a testament to how important he has become to his national team setup.
'A Massive Privilege' — Charles on His Craven Cottage Move
Charles was visibly excited about the deal, making his feelings clear on Fulham's official channels.
"I'm buzzing to finally get it over the line. The club has got a really good foundation, from the bottom to the top really," he said. "It's a great club, with a really good vision — the manager explained that to me. To be here is a massive privilege. I hope to really kick-start my Premier League career. At such a good club as well, it's perfect for me, and hopefully perfect for the fans as well."
Fulham are set to open their Premier League campaign on Monday, 24 August at Craven Cottage against Chelsea, giving Charles a high-profile stage on which to make his debut — and leaving no doubt that Arbeloa is building something with genuine ambition on the banks of the Thames.
