Manchester United opened formal talks with West Ham in late June, but the two clubs remained far apart on valuation and United were reluctant to overpay for a player they were not entirely sure wanted to come to Old Trafford. Tottenham had fewer reservations. Ange Postecoglou identified Fernandes as a transformative talent who could thrive in his high-intensity system, and the club moved swiftly once it became clear United were hesitating.
Fernandes reportedly had his head turned by Spurs' giant offer, and sources close to the player suggest the prospect of working under Postecoglou at a club with clear ambitions was more appealing than a United side still finding its footing under Ruben Amorim.
Who Is Mateus Fernandes?
If the name is unfamiliar to some supporters, it won't be for much longer. Fernandes, 21, arrived at West Ham from Sporting Lisbon in 2024 and quickly established himself as one of the most technically gifted midfielders in the Premier League. His combination of pressing intelligence, dribbling ability, and passing range drew comparisons to a young Renato Sanches — but with more end product and far greater consistency.
In his debut season in east London, Fernandes registered 9 goals and 11 assists from central midfield — extraordinary numbers for a player in that position. His performances earned him his first senior cap for Portugal, and he has since become a fixture in the national team setup under Roberto Martinez.
What This Means for Spurs
Combined with the £100 million signing of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle, Tottenham have now spent £185 million on midfield alone this summer. West Ham's Tough Summer
For West Ham, losing Fernandes is a significant blow.
