Chelsea Football Club have broken the British transfer record — again — landing England forward Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a deal worth £117 million, making him the most expensive British player in football history. The 23-year-old completed his medical at Cobham on Monday and has signed a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge.
The fee eclipses the previous British record set just weeks earlier when Elliot Anderson joined Manchester City from Newcastle for a reported £116 million, and it underlines the scale of ambition at Chelsea under their new manager Xabi Alonso, who has wasted little time in reshaping the squad since taking the reins in the summer.
Why Alonso Wanted Rogers
Rogers had been one of the most talked-about players in England for the past 18 months. His time at Aston Villa was nothing short of sensational — combining relentless pressing, direct dribbling, and a sharp eye for goal in a way that very few English players had managed to do before him. He finished the 2025-26 season with 22 goals and 13 assists across all competitions, performances that earned him a place in Gareth Southgate's World Cup squad and cemented his status as one of the most exciting attackers in European football.
For Alonso, Rogers brings exactly the type of versatile, high-energy forward that his system demands. The Spaniard has spoken at length about wanting players who are comfortable pressing from the front, carrying the ball in tight spaces, and arriving late into the box — and Rogers is all of those things in one package.
Arsenal's Late Push Came to Nothing
Arsenal had been in conversations with Rogers and his representatives for several weeks, and at one point were widely reported to be the frontrunners for his signature. But Chelsea's financial firepower — and crucially, the opportunity to work with Xabi Alonso — proved too strong a pull. The England international is understood to have been enthused by Alonso's vision for the club, and once Chelsea tabled their final offer, the deal moved quickly.
It is the second major signing Mikel Arteta has missed out on this summer, with Sandro Tonali also choosing Tottenham over Arsenal earlier in the window. The pressure is mounting on Arsenal's recruitment team to find answers in the final weeks before deadline day.
Villa's Record Windfall
For Aston Villa, £117 million is a staggering return on a player they developed over two and a half years. Having signed Rogers from Manchester City's academy structure in late 2023, the Villa hierarchy had done extraordinary work in refining and elevating his game under Unai Emery's guidance. The money will give them genuine firepower in the transfer market to strengthen across the squad.
What Rogers Brings to Stamford Bridge
Chelsea's attacking options already looked exciting heading into 2026-27, but the arrival of Rogers takes them to another level. If Rogers can replicate his Villa form on the biggest stage — and there is every reason to believe he can — Chelsea's investment will look like a bargain in two or three seasons' time.
