Sandro Tonali is Tottenham's new record signing. The Italy international has completed his £100m move from Newcastle to Spurs — a fee that beats their previous club record by £15m, and a transfer that reshapes both clubs heading into next season.
Newcastle paid £55m for him in the summer of 2023. Tottenham are paying £100m. That £45m profit arrives in the same window as the £69.3m from Anthony Gordon's Barcelona move, meaning Newcastle have banked nearly £170m from two player sales in a matter of weeks. Eddie Howe's recruitment team will be busy.
Tonali's Time at Newcastle
His first season at St. James' Park was cut short. The Football Association handed him an eight-month ban after he admitted to gambling on matches during his AC Milan years. He missed the majority of the 2023-24 campaign. When he returned, though, he returned properly.
Last season Tonali played 38 games across all competitions, scored six goals from midfield, and became one of the better ball-winners in the Premier League. His assist numbers were low. His defensive output was not. Newcastle's midfield ran differently when he was in it — more compact, harder to play through — and Tottenham have spent £100m on that quality of performance.
Why Spurs Paid £100m
They needed a midfielder badly. Yves Bissouma has left. The gap in Spurs' engine room has been there since January and Ange Postecoglou needed a player who could dominate that space without a settling-in period. Tonali already knows the Premier League inside out. He does not need time to adjust to the pace. That familiarity, at this point in the window, has a premium attached to it.
Tottenham have tied him to a four-year deal, running to 2030. These are prime years. They are not buying a stop-gap.
What Newcastle Do With the Money
They had already moved before either sale was confirmed. Aladji Bamba from Monaco (£35.5m), Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim (£42m), Sean Steur from Ajax (£23m), and Ewen Jaouen from Reims (£18.5m) have all arrived at St. James' Park this summer. Those signings were not funded by the Tonali and Gordon sales — they preceded them. The transfer income will underwrite the next phase of Howe's rebuild.
Whether the replacements collectively match the two players who left is the only question that matters now. Newcastle believe they will. Tottenham clearly believe £100m gets them a player who helps change their own trajectory. Both bets get tested from August.
