Liverpool Beat Sunderland 4-2 in Iraola's First Game but Joe Gomez Injury Clouds the Celebration

There was a lot riding on Andoni Iraola's first competitive outing as Liverpool manager, and his side delivered — at least on the scoreboard. A 4-2 win over Sunderland in a pre-season friendly gave the Reds something to cheer about, but the mood around the camp soured quickly when defender Joe Gomez limped off before half-time with what looks like a potentially serious knee problem.

For Iraola, it was a game that summed up the bittersweet reality of pre-season football. Your team scores four goals and you're supposed to feel good, but when one of your experienced centre-backs goes down clutching his leg, four goals suddenly feel irrelevant. Liverpool's medical staff escorted Gomez straight down the tunnel, and the club is now waiting on scan results to confirm the extent of the damage.

Gomez Injury Overshadows the Win

Gomez has had a difficult relationship with injuries throughout his career at Anfield. The England international has missed chunks of multiple seasons with various problems, and his latest setback comes at the worst possible time — right as a new manager is trying to figure out his best defensive setup ahead of the new campaign.

Liverpool only recently moved on from Virgil van Dijk, who departed this summer after years at the heart of the Reds' backline. Without the Dutchman, there's already a question mark over who partners Ibrahima Konaté at the back. Gomez was expected to be one of the answers to that question. If he's sidelined for any significant stretch, Iraola will need to move fast in the transfer market or find an alternative from within his current crop.

Sources close to the club say there's genuine concern, though everyone is staying cautious until the scans come back. "We'll have a better picture in 24 to 48 hours," Iraola told reporters after the game, choosing his words carefully — which in football usually means the news isn't great.

The Positives: Szoboszlai Shines, Attack Fires

On the brighter side, Dominik Szoboszlai was outstanding throughout. The Hungarian midfielder bossed the central areas and showed exactly why Liverpool regard him as one of their key men going into 2026-27. His combination play in tight spaces and his ability to pick the right pass under pressure gave Iraola's attack a real tempo and edge.

Liverpool's front three looked lively and direct, pressing Sunderland's defenders into mistakes with the kind of intensity you'd expect from a team that's been drilled hard in pre-season training. The goals themselves were well-worked — none of them cheap. Sunderland battled admirably and got two of their own, which at least showed the fixture had some competitive backbone rather than being a glorified training exercise.

Iraola, who built his reputation at Bournemouth by implementing high-energy pressing systems, clearly wants Liverpool to press hard from the front and play with genuine pace. The Reds looked more structured and aggressive than they did in the latter stages of last season, which is encouraging — though reading too much into any pre-season result carries its own risks.

What Comes Next for Iraola's Liverpool

Liverpool's pre-season schedule continues with further fixtures before the Premier League begins. For Iraola, the priority is now twofold: get clarity on Gomez's condition as quickly as possible, and continue building cohesion across a squad that has gone through significant changes this summer.

The club is expected to bring in defensive reinforcements regardless, but the Gomez injury — if serious — could accelerate those conversations considerably. Names are being discussed internally, though nothing is anywhere close to being announced.

For now, Liverpool fans can take the 4-2 win for what it is: an encouraging sign that Iraola's ideas are beginning to take shape. But the Gomez situation is a reminder that football always finds a way to balance the good news with something that keeps you up at night.
