Real Madrid's £129m Bid for Julian Alvarez Rejected — Atletico Hit Back With Brutal Response

If Real Madrid thought a €150 million (£129m) offer would be enough to prise Julián Álvarez away from the Metropolitano, Atlético Madrid's response was swift, blunt, and — depending on your allegiances — either deeply satisfying or deeply embarrassing for the Bernabéu club. "We neither study nor consider any offer for Julián," came the official line from Atlético. Then, with a social media dig aimed squarely at their city rivals: "You make us laugh even more than Barça do." The gloves are off.

Why Real Madrid Want Álvarez So Badly

Álvarez has been one of La Liga's most consistent performers since his move from Manchester City, combining the relentless pressing and movement that defined him in England with a new technical refinement that has made him even more dangerous. Real Madrid — who are currently navigating a complicated rebuild — see him as the missing piece in their attack, a forward with Champions League pedigree, World Cup gold medals, and the hunger of a player still at the peak of his powers. The €150m bid was, by Real Madrid's own standards, a statement of serious intent. Atlético treated it like a nuisance.

The Release Clause Problem

The issue is straightforward: Álvarez signed a contract with Atlético that runs until 2030, and embedded in that deal is a €500 million release clause. Real Madrid's €150m offer is not even a third of that figure. Atlético have absolutely no obligation — legal or moral — to negotiate. Florentino Pérez, who was re-elected as president until 2030 and had publicly promised a marquee signing, now finds himself in the awkward position of having named his target, gone public with a bid, and been laughed at for his trouble.

What Happens Next

Real Madrid have reportedly indicated they will not enter a bidding war, which effectively means this move is dead — for this summer at least. Other clubs including Arsenal, PSG, and Barcelona have been circling, but none are likely to meet that release clause. Álvarez himself has said nothing publicly, though sources close to the player suggest he is happy in Madrid and not actively pushing for a move. For Real, the search for their next Galáctico continues. For Atlético, this was a very good day's work — even before a ball was kicked.

Transfer context: Julián Álvarez, 26, Atlético Madrid | Contract until 2030 | Release clause: €500m | Real Madrid bid: €150m (rejected June 9, 2026) | No further bids expected this window.
