It is official. Anthony Gordon has left Newcastle United for Barcelona in a deal worth up to £69.3 million, bringing to an end a spell on Tyneside that turned the former Everton youngster into one of England's most exciting wide players. The 25-year-old signed a five-year contract and was unveiled to the Catalan press on Friday night, completing one of the summer's most anticipated moves.

The Deal Breakdown

Barcelona paid an initial €70 million (around £60m) to Newcastle, with a further €10m available in performance-related add-ons. The clauses are structured around success: Newcastle will receive an extra €5m if Gordon wins a trophy with Barça, and an additional €1m for every season in which he plays at least 60 per cent of Barcelona's matches. It is a contract that incentivises Gordon to stay fit, play regularly, and win — three things Hansi Flick will be hoping come naturally at Camp Nou.

What Gordon Brings to Barcelona

Gordon enjoyed his finest season yet in 2025/26, contributing 17 goals and 13 assists across all competitions for Newcastle. His combination of directness, work rate, and end product made him one of the Premier League's standout performers, and it came as no surprise when Barcelona made their move. He offers something different to the more technical wide forwards in Flick's squad — a willingness to run beyond defenders, a direct threat in behind, and an engine that does not stop. He is, in short, exactly the sort of player modern Barcelona have been building towards.

What Newcastle Do Now

For Newcastle, the fee is significant. Losing Gordon hurts — he was not just a goal threat but the heartbeat of their attacking play — but the money gives Eddie Howe's recruitment team serious firepower to reshape the squad. Newcastle have been linked with several replacements already, and given how shrewdly they have spent in recent windows, do not expect the St. James' Park faithful to be too despondent for long. Gordon gave them everything during his time there. Now it is Barcelona's turn.
