Manchester United have accepted a 38 million pound offer from Napoli for Rasmus Hojlund, ending a turbulent two-year spell at Old Trafford for the Danish striker and marking the beginning of what looks like a wholesale summer clearout at the club. Hojlund arrived from Atalanta in the summer of 2023 for around 72 million pounds with considerable promise attached to his name, and there were flashes of that potential — particularly in the Europa League — but consistent Premier League form never arrived. Napoli, who are rebuilding after a difficult couple of campaigns following their 2022-23 Scudetto, see Hojlund as someone who can lead their attack for the next four years. United see 38 million pounds back into a transfer fund that is going to need every penny.

What Went Wrong at Old Trafford

The honest answer is that Hojlund was not at a club in a position to develop him. United dysfunction during the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons — the managerial upheaval, the lack of consistent tactical identity, the constant injury crises — made it almost impossible for any young striker to find rhythm. Hojlund scored 16 goals in his debut season, which is reasonable for a 21-year-old adapting to a new league and a chaotic environment, but a series of hamstring problems and a difficult second campaign damaged his confidence and his numbers. He leaves with his talent intact, his reputation slightly bruised, and an opportunity at Napoli to rebuild in a less volatile environment.

Napoli Logic and United Next Move

Napoli interest makes football sense. Hojlund movement off the ball, his hold-up play, and his ability to run in behind are the qualities Napoli creative midfielders need from a centre-forward. Serie A has historically been a league where physical strikers with good movement thrive, and Hojlund fits that profile. The fee — 38 million pounds for a 23-year-old with European and international experience — represents reasonable value. For Manchester United, the money helps offset losses elsewhere. Casemiro has also left, Tyrell Malacia contract has expired, and United need to spend intelligently on a squad that is well below the standard required to challenge for the Premier League title.

Denmark World Cup Concern

Hojlund is currently representing Denmark at the 2026 World Cup, and news of his club departure will not go unnoticed in the dressing room. Players generally perform better when their club situations are settled, and Denmark coaching staff will want to ensure this does not become a distraction. Hojlund has looked sharp in pre-tournament friendlies and, whatever else can be said about his time at United, he has remained a threat at international level. Napoli will be watching his World Cup closely with every goal he scores driving up the transfer fee justification — and United new hierarchy will be hoping they made the right call letting him go at this price.

Transfer context: Rasmus Hojlund, 23, Denmark. Manchester United to Napoli, 38m pounds. United paid 72m pounds to Atalanta in 2023. Hojlund Premier League goals 2023-25: approx 16. Also leaving United: Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia.
