Canada have been dealt a serious blow ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener after centre-back Moise Bombito was ruled out of the tournament with a leg injury sustained in training. The 23-year-old Chelsea defender, one of the cornerstones of Jesse Marsch's defensive setup, suffered the problem during a session in Vancouver earlier this week and was subsequently assessed by the national team's medical staff. The verdict, confirmed on Monday afternoon, has cast a shadow over what should have been a week of celebration for the host nation.

Who is Bombito and why does this hurt so much

Moise Bombito only established himself as a senior international relatively recently, but in a short space of time he has become one of the most important players in the Canada setup. A tall, composed centre-back with excellent reading of the game, Bombito joined Chelsea from the Colorado Rapids in 2023 and has impressed at Stamford Bridge, earning consistent minutes in a squad known for its size. For Canada, he provided the kind of calm defensive leadership that was missing in previous cycles. His absence means Marsch will have to rejig his back line significantly for the tournament opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 13, with the expectation that Steven Vitoria or Derek Cornelius will step in.

The timing could not be worse

Canada's path through the World Cup group stage was never going to be simple even with a full squad available. They are drawn in Group B alongside Argentina, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina — a group that requires points in the Bosnia game at minimum if Canada are to progress. Losing Bombito means facing what is effectively a must-win fixture with a reshuffled defensive partnership and without the player who has been Canada's most consistent performer over the past twelve months. Marsch addressed the press on Tuesday and tried to project calm, insisting that the squad had depth and that the team would be ready. Whether the broader group buys that is another matter.

Canada's World Cup hopes still very much alive

Despite the setback, there is reason for Canadian fans to hold onto hope. The squad still contains Alphonso Davies, Jonathan David, and Tajon Buchanan — three players capable of deciding games at the highest level. Home advantage counts for something at a World Cup too, particularly with the Toronto fixtures likely to produce significant crowd support for the Canadian side. Bombito's absence hurts, but this is still a team with genuine quality. Whether they can convert that quality into points against elite opposition, without one of their key defensive pieces, is the central question hanging over their campaign before it has even kicked off.

Injury context: Moise Bombito, 23, Canadian international (Chelsea FC). Ruled out of 2026 FIFA World Cup with leg injury sustained in training, June 2026. Canada's World Cup Group B: Argentina, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Canada opener: June 13 vs Bosnia and Herzegovina, Toronto.
