Andy Robertson has completed his move to Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer, ending an eight-year association with Liverpool that produced some of the most memorable moments in the club's recent history. The Scotland captain, 32, left Anfield when his contract expired this summer and has chosen Spurs as the next chapter of his career, joining a squad that Roberto De Zerbi is reshaping with serious ambition. The deal was confirmed on Monday, with Robertson signing a two-year contract at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Why Robertson chose Spurs

Several clubs registered interest in Robertson once it became clear that Liverpool would not be offering a new deal. His age and the fact that Kostas Tsimikas had taken over as the first-choice left-back made the decision straightforward from Liverpool's perspective, even if it was not without sentiment. Robertson, however, had no shortage of options. The appeal of Tottenham came down to De Zerbi's project. The Italian coach, who arrived at Spurs from Brighton last year, has a well-documented preference for full-backs who are aggressive in possession and capable of inverted runs into central areas. Robertson, despite being 32, still fits that profile. De Zerbi is known for extending the careers of experienced players who are technically intelligent, and Robertson has those qualities in abundance.

What Robertson brought to Liverpool

It would be easy to understate Robertson's contribution to Liverpool's remarkable trophy run under Jurgen Klopp. He joined from Hull City in 2017 for just £8 million — one of the great transfer bargains of the Premier League era — and within two seasons had established himself as arguably the best left-back in Europe. His crossing was a weapon, his defensive reading was excellent, and his relationship with Trent Alexander-Arnold on the opposite flank gave Liverpool a width that opposition teams consistently struggled to cope with. He won the Champions League in 2019, the Premier League title in 2019-20, and collected every major trophy available to him in English football before age and fitness began to affect his influence.

What this means for Spurs

Tottenham's left-back position has been a source of frustration for the club over the past few years. They have cycled through options without finding a consistent solution, and bringing in a player of Robertson's pedigree — even at this stage of his career — addresses that immediately. De Zerbi will not expect Robertson to play every game, but as a combination of experienced squad player and regular starter, the signing makes considerable sense. Spurs are due to begin their Premier League campaign on August 9, and Robertson is expected to be fit and available from the start of pre-season.
