Brazil were supposed to make a statement at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In a tournament hosted in their own hemisphere, facing a Morocco side that — however talented — had never beaten them, the Seleção were expected to walk away from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena with three points and a sense of momentum.

Instead, they left with one. And they are lucky to have that.

Brazil 1-1 Morocco. Ismael Saibari put the Atlas Lions ahead after 37 minutes with a composed finish from Hakim Ziyech's whipped cross. Brazil pushed and probed but found Morocco's defensive block stubborn, organised, and deeply difficult to break down. It took a moment of individual brilliance from Vinicius Junior — a jinking run into the penalty area and a left-footed finish at the near post — to salvage the equaliser in the 78th minute. A point apiece. Both sides left with mixed feelings.

What Went Wrong for Brazil

Let's be clear about what this draw means. Brazil are not in crisis. A 1-1 draw in the opening game of a World Cup has happened to far stronger teams than this Morocco side, and the Seleção still have two group games to claim top spot in Group C. But the performance raised real questions about the tactical identity of Dorival Júnior's side.

Without Neymar — retired at international level — Brazil have not settled on a coherent attacking system. Vinicius is the focal point, the star, the difference-maker, but the team around him lacks a clear identity. Rodrygo was peripheral. Endrick, at 19, showed energy but got isolated. The midfield trio of Bruno Guimarães, Lucas Paquetá, and Gerson struggled to control the tempo against Morocco's compact shape.

Morocco came here to compete, not just participate. Their organisation under Walid Regragui was exceptional — midfield intensity, quick ball recovery, a defensive structure that gave Brazil nothing for long periods. Saibari's goal was no fluke; it came from sustained pressure and a carefully constructed attacking move.

What This Means for the Group

Group C now looks genuinely open. Scotland beat Haiti 1-0 in the other group game, meaning Scotland sit top with three points, Brazil and Morocco both have one, and Haiti are bottom with nothing. Brazil still have Scotland and Haiti to play — on paper, they should progress with ease. But after this performance, "on paper" feels slightly less reliable than it did 90 minutes ago.

The Vinicius goal deserves credit. It was an individual moment of exceptional quality — the sort of goal that only a handful of players in the world can manufacture from nothing. But a team built around hoping its star produces moments of brilliance is not a team that wins World Cups. Brazil need more from the collective.

Dorival Júnior will have a lot to think about before the next fixture. So will the millions of Brazilians who went to bed last night deeply unsatisfied.
