Jose Mourinho has been back at Real Madrid for less than a month and he has already landed one of the most coveted free agents in European football. Bernardo Silva, 31, has signed for Real Madrid on a two-year deal after nine years at Manchester City — a departure that closes one of the most decorated chapters in Premier League history and opens a fascinating new one at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The deal was done with remarkable speed. According to reports, talks between the club, the player, and agent Jorge Mendes lasted just 36 hours from start to agreement. Mourinho, who had not yet been formally announced as Madrid's new manager when initial discussions began, was already pulling strings. He identified Silva as a priority target the moment he took the job, and he got his man.

Nine Years, Six Titles, and a Legacy at City

Silva joined Manchester City from Monaco in 2017 for around £43 million. What followed was extraordinary: six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, and the 2023 Champions League — the first in City's history. He was a central figure in Pep Guardiola's system for nearly a decade, a player whose intelligence, energy, and technical quality shaped how City played in the middle of the park.

His final season at the Etihad was difficult. The club's off-field situation cast a shadow over everything, and City's form declined sharply. But Silva himself remained professional throughout, and his performances never suggested a man going through the motions. He left on a free transfer with his reputation very much intact.

Mourinho's Masterplan

Real Madrid's summer under Mourinho has been active. In addition to Silva, the club have already confirmed the signings of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea for £51.8 million and Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan for £17 million, with Ibrahima Konate joining on a free transfer. The pattern is clear: Mourinho is building a squad that combines experience with tactical flexibility, a blend of leaders and technical players who can adapt to his system.

Silva fits that description perfectly. He can play as an attacking midfielder, in a deeper central role, or as a false nine — options that Mourinho has never been slow to exploit. At 31, he is still at the peak of his powers in terms of footballing intelligence, even if the explosive pace of his earlier years has given way to something more measured and precise.

What Comes Next

An official announcement is expected after the World Cup concludes in July. Silva is currently on international duty with Portugal, who are among the favourites to progress deep into the tournament. When the dust settles on the summer, he will report to Madrid for pre-season and the start of what could be a fascinating final chapter of his career under the most demanding manager in the game.
