Erling Haaland is not going to Barcelona. That much seems clear, at least for now. The Manchester City striker's agent, Rafaela Pimenta, has gone on record to say there has been "no contact whatsoever" between her client and Barcelona, and Haaland himself has shown no sign that he wants out of the Etihad. He has a contract until 2034. He is one of the highest-paid players in the world. He has scored over 160 goals for Manchester City. None of this looks like a man preparing for a move.
Why the rumours won't die
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has been linked with an obsessive pursuit of Haaland for some time, with the club positioning the Norwegian as the long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski. Lewandowski's contract expires at the end of this season, which adds a layer of urgency to Barca's planning. The theory goes that their new Nike kit deal gives them fresh financial firepower, and that they have been quietly exploring the possibility of a deal worth around £125m-£149m. It is ambitious. It is also, by most measures, unrealistic given Manchester City's position and Haaland's own lack of public interest in the move.
Guardiola's take
Pep Guardiola has been typically direct on the subject. He told reporters recently that Haaland "isn't stupid enough" to consider leaving Manchester City, while acknowledging he understands why Barcelona want him. Guardiola knows better than most what Haaland brings — not just the goals, but the way he stretches defences and creates space for everyone around him. Losing him would be a different kind of problem entirely for City.
The numbers tell the real story
Haaland is 25 years old and tied to Manchester City until 2034. For Barcelona to make this happen, they would need to convince Haaland to push for a move, convince City to sell one of the most dominant strikers on the planet, and then finance a deal that would require fees and wages likely beyond what their accounts can currently sustain. Each of those three things is difficult on its own. All three at once feels close to impossible. The rumour will probably come back again in summer. It usually does.
What City are planning instead
While the Barcelona noise continues, Manchester City are quietly getting on with planning for their own future. Reports suggest they are planning significant investment in the squad this summer — up to five major signings — as Pep Guardiola looks to rebuild around Haaland rather than without him. That framing matters. City's summer transfer strategy is being built with Haaland at the centre of it. That is not the posture of a club preparing to sell.
