Bruno Fernandes has been named the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year for 2026, picking up 45 per cent of the vote to edge out Arsenal's Declan Rice and become the first Manchester United player to win the award since Wayne Rooney in 2010. It has been that kind of season at Old Trafford — one where almost nothing went right for the club until Michael Carrick arrived in January, and yet Fernandes was consistently the one player you could point to and say: he has been at it all year. The award feels deserved.

A season that demanded everything from him

For much of the first half of this season, Manchester United were in genuine crisis. Results were poor, the manager was replaced, and the atmosphere around the club was grim. Fernandes, as captain, kept producing. He is now one assist short of equalling the Premier League record of 20 in a single season — a number that felt untouchable not long ago — and has created 120 chances across the campaign, nearly double the total of his nearest challengers. Those are not just good numbers. They are historic numbers in the context of this league.

Carrick's role and what happens next

When Carrick came in, United were on the fringes of the bottom half. They will now finish in the top four and have secured Champions League qualification with three games to spare. Fernandes has been central to everything — the creativity, the captaincy, the mood. Carrick has been keen to quash any talk of a summer exit for his best player. "We don't talk about Bruno leaving," Carrick said this week, which is both a confident public statement and the kind of phrasing that becomes a headline. United are confident he will stay. The player has said nothing to suggest otherwise. The contract picture will be clearer by June.

What the award means in a broader sense

The FWA award going to a United player feels like a small statement about how much the club's fortunes have shifted in five months. When Carrick was handed the job in January, Champions League football looked like a stretch. Fernandes winning Footballer of the Year — beating Arsenal's most important midfielder in a season Arsenal are in the Champions League final — tells you something about the individual quality he has shown. Rice had a brilliant campaign too. The margin between them in the vote, 45 per cent to whatever Rice received, suggests the football writers saw something particularly consistent in what Fernandes delivered week in, week out under real pressure.

Player profile: Bruno Fernandes, 31, attacking midfielder. Club: Manchester United (captain). FWA Footballer of the Year 2026 — first United winner since Wayne Rooney (2010). Season stats: 19 assists (one short of PL record), 120 chances created. Champions League qualified under Michael Carrick.
