Aston Villa in Europa League Final: Emery Targets Historic Fifth Title Against Freiburg

Unai Emery has already won the UEFA Europa League four times. The thought of him winning a fifth, with Aston Villa, in Istanbul on May 28, feels almost absurd — the kind of storyline that gets dismissed as too neat. But here we are. Villa face SC Freiburg in the final, and Emery has built a side that looks every bit capable of making it happen.

How Villa got to Istanbul

Villa's route to the final was not pretty in places, but it was convincing. They beat Marseille in the semi-finals across two legs without conceding a goal at Villa Park, and their defence, built around Pau Torres and Ezri Konsa, has been one of the most organised in the competition all season. Ollie Watkins has been the attacking focal point — 11 goals in the Europa League this season, a club record — and Morgan Rogers has grown into a player capable of deciding matches on his own. This is not a team that got lucky. They earned it.

What Freiburg bring

SC Freiburg are not a glamour side, but they are genuinely difficult to play against. Under Julian Schuster — who took over from the legendary Christian Streich last summer — they press well and are physically competitive. Their semi-final win over Bayer Leverkusen was one of the shocks of the competition. They have nothing to lose and everything to gain, which is a dangerous combination in a one-off final. Emery knows better than most that Europa League finals are rarely straightforward regardless of who is the favourite.

The fifth title — and what it would mean

If Villa win in Istanbul, Emery becomes the most decorated Europa League manager in history outright. He already holds the record jointly. For Aston Villa, a European trophy would be transformational — not just financially, with the Champions League qualification it brings, but in terms of what the club thinks it can become. Under Randy Lerner and the years that followed the failed 2010 era, this kind of moment felt impossible. Under Emery, it feels inevitable — or at least, within reach. That is a remarkable thing. The final is May 28. Prediction: Villa 2-1 Freiburg after extra time.

Match details: Aston Villa vs SC Freiburg, UEFA Europa League Final, Atatürk Olympic Stadium, Istanbul — Thursday 28 May 2026. Emery record: 4 Europa League titles (Sevilla x3, Villarreal x1). Watkins Europa League goals this season: 11.
