Barcelona Opt Against Rashford Permanent Deal but Push for Second Loan as United Wait

Barcelona have decided against triggering their £26m option to sign Marcus Rashford permanently from Manchester United — but that does not mean the story is over. The Spanish club, still navigating the financial constraints that have shaped their transfer activity for several years, are now in active discussions with United over a second consecutive loan deal for the England forward. The situation leaves Rashford in an awkward position: wanted at the Camp Nou in spirit, but not at the price it would take to make him theirs permanently, at least not yet.

Why the Permanent Deal Fell Through

Rashford arrived in Barcelona with genuine fanfare and showed real promise in the early months of his loan, but his influence faded during the business end of the season as Barcelona came under pressure in both the Champions League and Copa del Rey. Hansi Flick's side were eliminated from both competitions, and in those high-stakes games Rashford struggled to justify the kind of starring role that would have made the permanent fee feel like an easy call. Barcelona's finances mean they are working with limited flexibility, and spending £26m on a player who has not fully convinced during the knockout stages is a harder sell internally than it might appear from the outside.

The Second Loan Option

The emerging solution is a second season-long loan. Barcelona want to keep Rashford in their squad — Flick, who has worked with him closely, is said to support the extension — and United are open to a further arrangement rather than having the player return to Old Trafford without a clear role in Michael Carrick's new project. Rashford himself has made clear he is happy to accept less money to stay in Barcelona rather than go back to England, which reflects both his personal contentment in Spain and his awareness that the situation at United remains complicated. Whether a second loan leads to a permanent deal eventually is a question that only the next twelve months will answer.

What This Means for United

For Manchester United and Michael Carrick, the outcome is largely pragmatic. Rashford is off the wage bill for another season, his development continues without the friction that surrounded his Old Trafford career, and the door to a future permanent sale remains open. United retain his contract, his value, and a degree of leverage. The risk is that another season of distance further reduces the chance of a meaningful reunion, but given that Carrick is building a new midfield and a new identity at the club, keeping Rashford at arm's length for another year suits everyone's immediate needs.

Context: Marcus Rashford, 28, has been on a season-long loan at Barcelona from Manchester United. Barcelona's £26m buy option has not been triggered. Negotiations over a second loan deal are ongoing. Rashford has been capped over 60 times by England.
