Man United Want Tchouameni — and Real Madrid Might Actually Sell

Manchester United want Aurelien Tchouameni. The French midfielder, 26, has been identified by the club as a priority target this summer as they look to finally address the gaping hole in their midfield — and the extraordinary thing is that Real Madrid might actually be open to a deal.

That's not a sentence you expected to write about one of the best young defensive midfielders in Europe just two years ago. But football moves fast, and circumstances at the Bernabeu have shifted considerably.

Why Real Madrid would sell

Madrid signed Tchouameni from Monaco in 2022 for around 80 million euros. He was supposed to be the long-term successor to Casemiro — a physically dominant, defensively smart midfielder who could hold the line for a decade. And by most measures, he's delivered. He's been good at Real Madrid. Not always brilliant, but consistently solid.

The issue is competition. Madrid's midfield options are deep, and with younger players pushing through and Ancelotti favouring different profiles at times, Tchouameni's role has occasionally felt less secure than his talent deserves. If a significant offer arrives — something north of 70 million pounds — the club might listen.

Why United want him

Because they desperately need someone who can actually hold a midfield. The last eighteen months have exposed United in that area repeatedly. They've conceded too easily from central positions, struggled to control games, and relied too heavily on individual brilliance to rescue situations that better defensive structure would have prevented.

Tchouameni fixes that. He's the kind of player who makes everything around him better — the defender who can read the game a pass early, the midfielder who covers ground without being asked. Under Michael Carrick, United's system would suit him perfectly. He's a player who makes managers look smart.

The complications

The fee is significant. United don't have unlimited funds, and this would be one of the biggest purchases in the club's post-Glazer era. There are also personal terms to sort — Tchouameni is well-paid at Madrid, and matching that in Manchester is not straightforward.

And Real Madrid rarely sell to English clubs willingly. They'll negotiate hard, hold out for top price, and probably insert clauses that protect their interests if Tchouameni develops into an even better player. Deals involving Madrid always have layers.

But United are serious. And serious interest from a club this size, backed by proper money, tends to find a way. Watch this one through the summer.
