Julián Álvarez has made his decision. According to multiple reports this week, the Atletico Madrid striker is prioritising a move to Barcelona over Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain — and it could cost him a return to the Premier League that the other top clubs were counting on.

Arsenal, Barcelona and PSG have all reportedly made formal offers to Atletico Madrid for the 26-year-old Argentine, who has been one of the best strikers in Europe this season. The problem for Arsenal? He does not want to come.

No desire to return to England

Álvarez spent two years at Manchester City before joining Atletico in the summer of 2024 for a reported €75 million. He settled quickly in Madrid, scoring 19 goals and adding nine assists in what has been a spectacular debut campaign for Diego Simeone's side. Now the big clubs are circling — but the player has already made clear where he wants to go next if he moves.

Sources consistently report that Álvarez has no particular desire to return to the Premier League. He enjoyed his time at City, but his preference is Barcelona. The opportunity to play in La Liga, lead the Barcelona attack after Robert Lewandowski, and challenge for the Champions League at the Camp Nou is reportedly very appealing to him.

Arsenal's striker problem remains

This is bad news for Mikel Arteta. Arsenal have been searching for a top-quality centre-forward for some time, and Viktor Gyokeres — despite his promise — has not quite reached the level to lead a title-winning charge. Álvarez would have been ideal. He plays like a player who makes those around him better, creates space, presses relentlessly, and scores in the big moments.

But you cannot force a player to come to your club, and if Álvarez's mind is set on Barcelona, Arsenal will need to move on and identify other targets quickly. The summer window does not wait.

Barcelona lead the race

Barcelona's interest makes sense on every level. Lewandowski is 37 and heading towards the end of his career. They need a long-term successor at centre-forward, and Álvarez — at 26, in his prime, with World Cup winner on his CV and 19 goals this season — ticks every box.

Atletico Madrid will not let him go cheaply. The Argentine was bought for €75 million less than two years ago, and any offer would likely need to significantly exceed that figure given his performances. Reports suggest a fee in the region of €100-150 million has been mooted, with Atletico holding a strong negotiating position.

Nothing is signed. The summer window has not even opened yet. But if Álvarez stays true to his preference, Barcelona are about to land one of the most exciting forwards in world football — and Arsenal's search for a striker goes on.
