Barcelona want Alexander Sørloth this summer. Reports from Spain say the club sees the Norwegian striker as the primary option to take over from Robert Lewandowski, whose future at the Camp Nou is increasingly uncertain. Sørloth is 29, currently on loan at Atletico Madrid from Villarreal, and has had an inconsistent season — but Barcelona's interest is described as serious.
Lewandowski will be 38 in August. He has one year left on his contract. Barcelona have not publicly confirmed whether they will extend it, and the silence itself has been read as significant by most observers following the situation in Spain.
Why Sorloth?
At his best, Sørloth is physically imposing, good in the air, and capable of finishing. His spell in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig showed what he could do at the top level — he scored 28 goals in his debut season there. The problem is consistency. His spell at Atletico has been stop-start, partly through injury and partly because Simeone's system does not suit a striker of his type.
Barcelona's interest suggests they see potential for a more sustained run in their system. Hansi Flick tends to use a high press that requires forwards to work hard off the ball as well as on it. Sørloth covers ground. Whether he can do it reliably enough to replace Lewandowski — who has been extraordinary at the Camp Nou despite his age — is a different question.
What Lewandowski's departure would mean
Lewandowski has scored over 90 goals for Barcelona since joining in 2022. That kind of output does not get replaced by one signing. Barcelona are also looking at other forward options and will likely bring in more than one striker this summer regardless of what happens with Sørloth.
The timing also matters. Lewandowski's contract expires next summer, not this one. If Barcelona extend it, this whole conversation changes. If they do not, the rebuild starts now.
Transfer outlook
Villarreal own Sørloth's contract. The fee to make him permanent from Atletico was around €30 million. Barcelona would need to negotiate directly with Villarreal and then convince Sørloth that the Camp Nou is the right next step. Given Barcelona's financial limitations, the structure of any deal will matter as much as the headline figure.
