Three years after he called it a day, David Silva is playing football again. The former Manchester City and Spain midfielder has come out of retirement at the age of 40 to join Sha Tin, a club in the Hong Kong Premier League.
Why he stopped, and why he is back
Silva retired in 2023 after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in pre-season training at Real Sociedad, a blow that ended his career at 37. The comeback is a very different kind of move from the ones that made his name. Rather than another European club, he has chosen the Hong Kong league, and the tone of his announcement suggests the appeal is as much about the experience as the football. In a video on Instagram, Silva said he was excited to go to Hong Kong and enjoy the local culture, the food in Sha Tin and, of course, the football.
A career that is hard to overstate
The résumé is enormous. Silva won the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships with Spain, and four Premier League titles with City. He scored 60 Premier League goals in a decade at the Etihad and collected 11 major honours in that time, enough to earn a statue outside the stadium. It is worth adding that the first three of those title wins came in the period covered by the charges that an independent commission has found City guilty of breaching, findings the club have appealed.
What happens next in Hong Kong
Sha Tin sit eighth in the league after four matches, and their next game is against Hong Kong Football Club on Sunday 18 October. The club said he will arrive in Hong Kong soon, link up with the squad in training and build towards peak match fitness before making his pitch debut, so a date for his first appearance has not been set.
Whether a 40-year-old with a serious knee injury on his record can still run a game remains to be seen. Silva was never a player who relied on pace, though, and the best of his work always came from vision and touch. If those survived three years away, Sha Tin have signed a player with far more pedigree than most of the league can offer.
