Manchester City needed a Khadija Shaw goal to rescue a point at the Joie Stadium on Thursday night, and they got it. Real Madrid went ahead through Caicedo before half-time, Shaw levelled straight after the break, and neither side could find a winner in a Women's Champions League league-phase match that finished 1-1.

Caicedo puts Real in front

Real Madrid made the first breakthrough midway through the first half. Caicedo fired them ahead in the 29th minute from a pass by Andreia Jacinto, and the visitors went into the interval with the lead.

City came close as well. Fowler, the City forward, hit the bar and the post with the same header.

Shaw answers straight after the break

The response came quickly. Shaw equalised in the 51st minute, set up by Yui Hasegawa, and the home crowd had something to cheer. It was the kind of reply City needed after trailing at the break.

Former Arsenal and Brighton goalkeeper Emma Byrne, on the BBC's coverage, said City were coping better with Real's press than they had managed the previous week, when she felt Munich's press had been excellent.

The winner that never came

Both sides pushed, and the closing stages belonged to City. Corner after corner went in as the clock ran into stoppage time, and City kept coming. Mead put one chance over the bar when well placed, and the winner never arrived.

The third round of league-phase fixtures is scheduled for 28 and 29 October, and City will want a more decisive finish when they next play in Europe.
