Viktor Gyokeres scored in the 13th minute and Sweden held on to beat Romania 1-0 in Bucharest, a result that took plenty of defending. Romania had more of the ball and more shots, and still came away with nothing.

Sky Sports noted that the Arsenal striker was on target for Sweden again, and once more it was enough. As away wins go, it was a hard-earned one.

An Early Goal Sets the Tone

The match was barely a quarter of an hour old when Gyokeres struck at the Arena Nationala. Sweden led from that point on, and it was still 1-0 when the teams went in at half-time. Romania had the whole second half to change that.

They could not. The match was played out into the sixth minute of stoppage time, which is a long time to hold a one-goal lead on the road, and Sweden did it.

Romania Pile on the Shots, Sweden Pile Up the Saves

The raw numbers read like a home side who deserved more. Romania had 52 per cent of the possession and 13 shots to Sweden's 12, with four of those on target against Sweden's two. Sweden's goalkeeper made four saves, Romania's keeper only one, and that gap is the story of the night.

Sweden were not simply sitting back, though. They managed 31 touches inside the Romanian box to the home side's 21, so the visitors kept finding their way into dangerous areas. One goal was all they needed, and Gyokeres supplied it.

Gyokeres Keeps Delivering

Scoring on a night when your side has less of the ball is the sort of efficiency managers value. Gyokeres found the net early and Sweden did the rest of the work around him. Arsenal supporters will be happy to see their striker arriving back from the break with another goal in his boots.

Sweden will take the three points and the clean sheet without worrying too much about the shot count. Romania, for their part, will wonder how a night of 13 attempts ended with nothing. The rest of the group campaign will show whether this was a one-off or a pattern.
