Jarell Quansah left Liverpool fifteen months ago for 35m euros and a chance to play every week. Bild reported on Thursday that Real Madrid have been watching him closely ever since, which puts Bayer Leverkusen in an awkward spot and Liverpool in a stranger one.
The awkwardness is a clause.
When the deal was done, Liverpool kept a buy-back option worth 70m euros, and it runs until 15 June 2027. If Madrid want the 23-year-old before that date, Liverpool are not a spectator. They are the one club in the market with a cheaper route to the same player, and they do not have to tell anybody in advance whether they intend to use it.
Why Madrid are looking at a defender who left England
They need at least two centre-backs next summer, and Quansah's profile fits the brief: quick across the ground, aggressive in the tackle, comfortable carrying the ball out. He can play right-back too. He started for England against Spain recently and was part of the side that won the European Under-21 Championship in 2025, so the international record is there even at his age.
There is also the human bit, which clubs never admit matters and which always does. Quansah is close to Jude Bellingham from the England set-up. That signs nobody. It does make a phone call easier.
He has been wanted before
Arsenal bid 65m euros for him in August and were turned down. Chelsea made enquiries and got no further. The reason is uncomplicated: Leverkusen have him contracted until 2030 and no hole in the accounts that selling him would fill, and a club in that position does not have to answer the phone. They can simply let it ring until the window shuts.
Which is the part most of the reporting skips. Madrid watching a player in October is not Madrid bidding in June.
The clause is the whole story
Anyone who wants Quansah has to get past a number Liverpool can pay whenever they choose, for the next twenty months. It is a strong position even if they never use it, and it is the reason this one is unlikely to move quickly. Watch the date, not the links.
