Ivan Basic scored from the penalty spot six minutes from time as Bosnia-Herzegovina beat Poland 1-0 at the Bilino Polje stadium in Zenica on Monday night. It was a win built on one moment, and one that Poland will feel they did little to deserve losing.
The visitors had far more of the ball and many more shots. Bosnia had one shot on target, and it turned into the match-winning goal.
Poland Do the Work, Bosnia Take the Points
Poland had 55.5 per cent of the possession and took 18 shots against Bosnia's nine. Four of the visitors' efforts were on target, to Bosnia's one. On those numbers alone, a Polish win looks the more natural result.
But Bosnia had one thing Poland did not, which was a single clear route to goal. The penalty came in the 84th minute, and Basic converted it from the spot. Poland were left with a few minutes to find an answer and could not.
A Night for Bosnia
The backdrop made the night more than a routine group fixture. A few days earlier the BBC showed a giant shirt being unveiled in Sarajevo to mark Edin Dzeko's retirement, and this was a home game played in a country still adjusting to life without its record striker. A late goal and a win is the kind of result that helps a team start moving on.
Bosnia are in Group B4, alongside Sweden and Romania. Sweden won 1-0 in Bucharest on the same night, which gives the group a lively look after the latest round of games.
What Poland Must Fix
For Poland the frustration is obvious. They produced the sort of numbers a side produces when it has control of a match and then failed to turn control into goals. Eighteen shots, four on target and no goal tells a clear story.
It leaves Poland with something to fix before the next window. A late penalty settled the game, and the shot count shows they were good enough to have scored already. Bosnia, meanwhile, will not ask too many questions of a result that gave them three points and a clean sheet.
