Hamburger SV had 15 shots, 29 touches inside the Frankfurt box and a first half they could be reasonably happy with. They also lost 3-1. Eintracht Frankfurt went through to the last 16 of the DFB-Pokal at the Volksparkstadion on Tuesday night by scoring three times in 19 minutes after the break, turning a goalless tie into a comfortable win.

Nothing between them at half-time

There was little to choose between the sides before the interval, and the scoreboard said so: 0-0 at the break. Hamburg were the busier team in the final third across the whole match, but nobody could turn that pressure into a goal. The restart changed things.

Three goals between the 56th and 75th minutes

Robin Koch broke the deadlock in the 56th minute with a goal created by Jonathan Burkardt. Burkardt then got on the scoresheet himself in the 71st minute, finishing a move that Mario Götze set up. Four minutes later Younes Ebnoutalib made it 3-0 from a Chaïbi assist. Burkardt was involved in two of the three goals, which tells you where Frankfurt's best moments came from. By the 75th minute the tie was effectively over.

Moffi pulls one back, Atubolu holds firm

Hamburg did not fold. Terem Moffi scored in the 79th minute to make it 3-1 and give the home supporters something to shout about. The best chance of a late scare arrived in stoppage time, when Patson Daka met a Martin Adeline cross with a header from the middle of the box. Noah Atubolu in the Frankfurt goal got down to his bottom left corner and saved it, and that was the end of Hamburg's night.

The numbers flatter the losers

On paper this looks like a game Hamburg should have won. They had 15 shots to Frankfurt's 12, six on target to five, and 29 touches in the opposition area against 14. Frankfurt had slightly more of the ball at 52 per cent. What separated the teams was what they did with their chances. Frankfurt turned three of their five shots on target into goals, while Atubolu made five saves to the Hamburg keeper's two. It was a classic cup lesson in finishing, and it took Frankfurt through.
