Sassuolo scored twice at home and still lost by four. Lazio won 6-2 at the MAPEI Stadium on Tuesday evening, scoring three times inside the first 16 minutes and adding three more between first-half stoppage time and the 65th minute, while the home side spent the last hour with ten men.
Three goals in the first 16 minutes
Lazio were ahead after two minutes, when Taylor scored. Sassuolo hit back inside five minutes through Kristian Thorstvedt, who finished a chance created by Doig, and for a moment it looked like an even contest. It was not. Isaksen restored the lead in the 13th minute from a Zaccagni assist, and three minutes later Floriani Mussolini made it 3-1 after a pass from Taylor. By the 16th minute Lazio had scored three, and Sassuolo had barely had time to settle.
Thorstvedt sees red after scoring
The night got worse for the home side in the 31st minute, when Thorstvedt was shown a red card. The same player who had briefly levelled the game was gone, and Sassuolo had to chase a two-goal deficit with ten men. They did find a way back into it before the break. Esposito scored in the 43rd minute from a Cinquegrano assist to make it 3-2. Lazio answered almost at once. Zaccagni scored in first-half stoppage time (45+1) from an Isaksen assist, and the visitors went in 4-2 up.
Zaccagni creates, Noslin finishes
The second half belonged to Tijjani Noslin. He scored in the 55th minute from a Zaccagni pass, and again in the 65th after Dele-Bashiru set him up. That made it 6-2, and the contest was over. Zaccagni finished with a goal and two assists, supplying the 13th-minute pass for Isaksen and the 55th-minute pass for Noslin.
The numbers behind a heavy defeat
Lazio had 16 shots to Sassuolo's nine and put eight of them on target, against two for the hosts. They had around 58 per cent of the possession and 27 touches inside the opposition box to Sassuolo's 11. Both of Sassuolo's shots on target went in, while Lazio's goalkeeper did not have to make a single save. Sassuolo's keeper made two. Sassuolo's problem was not a lack of goals. Three of Lazio's six had already gone in before Thorstvedt was sent off.
